The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is asking firefighters in the U.K. and Canada to be more vigilant about their safety when filling their tanks.
On Monday, the FDA announced it will expand the guidelines for how the canister should be filled with chlorine gas, which is a toxic gas used in some fires.
“We know from experience that chlorine can cause serious injuries and fatalities when used improperly, so we have taken this action to ensure the safety of our firefighters and their crews,” FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said in a statement.
